Starving Mother and Child in Calcutta
(Original Caption) India: Famine In India. By last week, an estimated 1,000,000 people had died of starvation in India and the British Government did nothing to control this situation. That number will undoubtedly rise before the final, tragic count is taken. Just released these startling pictures were taken in Calcutta at the peak of the famine in late October. Tiny, spindly limbs and a famine bloated belly make up the child this mother begs to keep alive. She has little hope and the child doesn't understand its own unrelieved suffering.
