Dutch Liberal party (VVD) leader Mark Rutte is cheered during national election night late on June 9, 2010 in Scheveningen. Partial results early on June 10 from the general elections showed the Liberals with 31 and Labor on 30 in the 150-seat parliament. Pushed into fourth place was the Christian Democratic Action party of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who had headed a center-left coalition since 2007, acknowledged defeat by resigning both his party's leadership and his seat in parliament.
