The Nevado del Ruiz volcano attracts tourists

It is the northernmost of the active volcanoes of the volcanic belt of the Andes, located on the border between the departments of Tolima and Caldas, in Colombia. It entered pyroclastic activity since 2012, throwing out a mixture of volcanic gases and solid materials (ash and rocks of different sizes), limiting its visit. It is also known for causing the Armero tragedy, which was a natural disaster product of an eruption on Wednesday, November 13, 1985, affecting the departments of Caldas and Tolima. After sixty-nine years of inactivity, the emitted flows melted about 10% of the mountain's glacier, sending four lahars (flows of mud, earth and debris products of volcanic activity) that descended the slopes of the Nevado, affecting the populations of Armero, Chinchina and Villamaría, leaving thousands of dead.
