UNITED STATES - CIRCA 2000: Dorothy Dandridge was a black actress at a time when blacks were given few major roles in Hollywood films. Born in Ohio in 1923, Dandrige made her movie debut in the Marx Brothers comedy "A Day at the Races" in 1937. Her best roles were in "Carmen Jones" in 1954, which earned her a Best Actress nomination, "Island in the Sun" in 1957 and "Porgy and Bess" in 1959. Dandridge died broke in 1965.
