Cowlinge College School
Cowlinge College School, Branches Park, Newmarket, [Suffolk], 1868. 'By the liberality of Sir Robert and Lady Pigot, of Branches Park, Newmarket, a "college school" has been erected in the village of Cowlinge, for the twofold purpose of providing elementary instruction for the children of labourers and a superior education for the sons or daughters of farmers and tradesmen in the parish. The poorer class pay at the rate of twopence a week, and learn reading, writing, arithmetic, the scriptures, history, grammar, geography, and singing. The upper-class pupils, who pay quarterly (at the rate of one guinea for boys and fifteen shillings for girls), are instructed in the usual branches of a plain English education, with bookkeeping by double and single entry, land surveying, algebra, mechanics, and experimental chemistry. The master is Mr. J. G. Millward, and the school is under Government inspection, besides which it is examined half yearly by members of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Lady Pigot, with the assistance of the Chaplain, the Rev. Dr. Margoliouth, has taken the most active part in organising and establishing this school, which seems likely to confer great benefit on the neighbourhood'. From "Illustrated London News", 1868.
