China's NPC Votes On The Draft Amendment To The Constitution Of People's Republic Of China

BEIJING, CHINA - MARCH 11: China's President Xi Jinping places his ballot in a box during a vote on an amendment to the constitution during a session of the National People's Congress at The Great Hall of The People on March 11, 2018 in Beijing, China. In an historic vote, Chinese lawmakers abolished presidential term limits and paved the way for Xi Jinping to rule indefinitely. Only two delegates out of 2,964 voted against the controversial change and three abstained at the annual gathering of Communist Party loyalists seen as a rubber-stamp exercise. Amending the constitution to allow the 64-year old Xi the possibility of being a 'leader for life' has stirred worries of China's return to an era of autocratic rule not seen since Mao Zedong. When the Communist Party announced the proposal to scrap term limits in February it said the move was needed to maintain stability and continuity as China navigates its economic and political rise.
