Indian Food - Chicken Curry

Chicken curry, also known as curried chicken or chicken kasha, is a South Asian dish that originated in India. It is popular throughout the Indian subcontinent, the Caribbean, the Arabian Peninsula, Southeast Asia, Great Britain, and Kenya. This dish is a spicy, delicious, and soupy chicken curry with potatoes, flavored with aromatic whole spices. It is a Sunday special Bengali recipe that is best enjoyed with piping hot rice and a squeeze of lime. In Bengali, 'murgi' means chicken and 'jhol' refers to a soupy curry. Traditionally, Bengali curries included large pieces of potatoes, which absorb the rich flavors of the curry, making it juicy and irresistibly delicious. The curry typically consists of chicken stewed in an onion- and tomato-based sauce, flavored with ginger, garlic, tomato puree, chili peppers, and a variety of spices, including turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cardamom. Outside of South Asia, chicken curry is often prepared using a pre-made spice mixture known as curry powder. The dish described here is specifically from Tehatta, West Bengal, India, as of June 8, 2024. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
