'Charles II's cavalcade through the City of London, 22nd April, 1661', (1662). The king's state entry into the City of London the day before his coronation, as part of the traditional procession between the Tower of London and Westminster. The king, centre, is riding a splendidly caparisoned horse and wearing a tall feathered hat over his wig. He is accompanied by Gentleman Pensioners and Yeomen of the Household carrying pole-axes and partisans in the earliest representation of the standing army. Ahead of him ride Horse Guards carrying maces; some of the officials wear petticoat breeches, an elaborate fashion of which there are few representations. The procession winds through special gates which were set up at Cornhill, Whitefriars, Leadenhall Street and Cheapside. Other personalities include George Monck, Master of the Horse, the rider behind the king, and Sir George Carteret, Vice-chamberlain, just emerging from the arch on the right.
