Robert Prevost Becomes The 267th Pope In History To Be Named Leo Xiv
VATICAN CITY, SPAIN - MAY 09: Cardinal Robert Prevost, Pope Leo XIV, the 267th Pope in history, appears before his faithful on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica on May 8, 2025, in Vatican City (Vatican). The smoke of the fourth smoke of the Conclave to elect Francis' successor has gone white at 18.08 hours, indicating that the new Pope has already been elected, by a majority of at least 89 votes, on the second day of the Conclave. He will be the 267th Pontiff of the Church. The chosen one has been the American bishop Robert Francis Prevost, 69 years old and native of Chicago, he has Peruvian nationality and Spanish ancestry. Prevost has a long career that has led him in recent years to be close to the late Pontiff who appointed him in 2023 prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, the body responsible for the selection and appointment of bishops. Belonging to the Order of St. Augustine, he has chosen the name Leo to be named pontiff, becoming Pope Leo XIV. (Photo By Stefano Spaziani/Europa Press via Getty Images)
