Burned bodies of political prisoners of the Nazis lie strewn about the entrance to a barn at Gardelegen. 16th April 1945. They had been killed by SS troops who forced them into a barn and set it on fire on April 13. Those who tried to escape were shot .Of the 1,100 prisoners, only 12 managed to escape. Most oft he victims were from Mittelbau-Dora and Hannover Stücken and had been evacuated and transferred to Gardelegen.
