Boys Wearing Woolen Petticoats
(Original Caption) 11/20: Boys of Inishmaan, Avan Islands, Galway Bay, dressed in their unique red woolen petticoats and cowhite slippers. Superstition is said to be the reason for their wearing of the petticoats by boys at Inishmaan. According to an ancient legend bad fairies are thought to be partial to little boys, but will not carry off little girls, hence the boys are disguised to fool the bad fairies, until old enough to take care of themselves.
