Illuminated Rievaulx Abbey Hosts Museum Of The Moon Artwork

HELMSLEY, NORTH YORKSHIRE - SEPTEMBER 18: Artwork called The Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram helps to illuminate English Heritage’s Rievaulx Abbey on September 18, 2019 in Helmsley, North Yorkshire. The artwork is part of an installation that will illuminate the Abbey over the next four nights. The moon, measuring seven metres in diameter, features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface. The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones. The former Cistercian abbey near Helmsley in North Yorkshire was one of the great abbeys in England until it was seized under Henry VIII of England in 1538 during the dissolution of the monasteries.
