Andrew Howe Besozzi Jumps Toward The Future
TERMINILLO MOUNTAIN, ITALY - JULY 6: (ITALY OUT) Andrew Howe Besozzi warms up during a long jump training session July 6, 2004 on Terminillo Mountain, (60 miles north Rome) Italy. Besozzi, a young new star athlete, was born in Los Angeles in 1985 but has had Italian citizenship ever since he moved to the town of Rieti, Italy at the age of 6. Besozzi is mostly known for his versatility in the 200 meters, long and triple jump. Besozzi's mother, Renee Felton, a former American hurdler of Caribbean origin, is still competing in veteran championships, and coaches Andrew and a group of young athletes in Rieti. Renee, who was formerly married to Andrew Howe senior, a former football player, in the USA, moved to Rieti after her second marriage to the Italian Ugo Besozzi. To prepare, Andrew and his mother flew to Los Angeles for a one-month training camp in 2003. During the trip to California Renee met, after many years apart, the sprint legend Tommie Smith, the 1968 Olympic 200m champion (World record of 19.83), who was her former coach. Smith gave advice to the young Besozzi. (Photo by Franco Origlia/Getty Images)
