Burning tyre during riots in Beirut (2007)

[UNVERIFIED CONTENT] After the war with Israel in July 2006 and the resignation of Hezbollah from the government in December 2006, Lebanon is in a political crisis. On January 23rd 2007 the Lebanese opposition led by Hezbollah calls for a general strike. Roads are blocked and tyres are burnt in order to prevent people to go to work. The protests go out of hand and lead to clashes between supporters of both sides, raising fears of a new civil war. This picture shows a burning tyre in front of an empty street. Actually there is a group of around 20 Hezbollah and Amal supporters behind the photographer, who had asked them for their authorization before taking the picture. The scene is located at Kantari Corner, on the "Green Line", which was the frontline in Beirut during the 1975-1991 Lebanese civil war.
