Old English Pastimes - Shooting the Popinjay - stock illustration

A group of 16th century men (including a man with a remarkable resemblance to King Henry VIII) enjoying the sport of ‘Shooting the Popinjay’, which is also known as ‘pole archery’. It involves shooting with a crossbow to sever the string holding a wooden bird at the top of a high pole. Traditionally, the Festival of Popinjay was held on the first Sunday in May. From “The Merrie Days of England; Sketches of the Olden Time” by Edward McDermott. Published by William Kent & Co, London, in 1859.
