(Commonly wrongly mislabelled as Ipomoea violacea).Convolvulaceae: annual climbing vine growing to 5 m (16ft 5in), hardy to zone 8/9, sky blue, yellow and white throated trumpet shaped flowers, are produced from July to October in the UK. Native to Southern North America, Mexico to the West Indies and tropical America. Widely cultivated and naturalised elsewhere.This has been used medicinally in the treatment of various mental disorders, the seeds, vines, flowers, and leaves contain ergoline alkaloids, and have been used for centuries by many Mexican Native American cultures as an entheogen; they were known to the Aztecs as tlitliltzin, the Nahuatl word for "black" with a reverential suffix. In South America, the seeds are also known as badoh negro. The active ergot alkaloids contained in the seeds are ergine, Lysergic acid hydroxyethylamide and ergonovine.
