Kenya - Samburu Girl in Elaborate Beaded Jewelry

A young Samburu girl wears her elaborate beaded jewelry. Adornment for beauty starts early among Samburu girls. Girls are given strings of beads by their fathers when they are still young. As soon as they are old enough to have lovers from the warrior age-set, they regularly receive gifts from them. They buy the imported beads from traders in market places often using the barter system, exchanging their goods for beads. Women also spend leisurely hours making necklaces in groups with other women and they use this quiet time to talk amongst themselves. (Photo by Wendy Stone/Corbis via Getty Images)
