Ventura artist M.B. Hanrahan sits atop a ladder in her new studio at the shuttered Bell Mattress Factory, where she will paint panels for a new Tortilla Flats mural with partner Moses Mora as part of a public arts project for the city of Ventura. For more than 50 years, the Addison family built and shipped mattresses worldwide from a cavernous building in the poorest section of Ventura. After founder Robert Addison died last year, his son Josh decided to shut the plant and convert it into cheap studio space for as many as 20 local artists. The building is being remodelled now and should open in a couple of months. The change is just the latest of several that have been greeted warmly by local artists, including a move by the city to develop live–work spaces for artists.
