FRANCE-WWI-HISTORY-MINING

TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY ETIENNE BALMER This photo taken on July 23, 2014 shows the memorial statue and remains of the French eastern village of Vauquois, on the hill where the village was located before World War I. Destroyed during World War I, the village of Vauquois was rebuilt downhill after the war. Officer Chambers, infirmaries, kitchens, chapels... under the hill of Vauquois, the galleries excavated by the French and the Germans during World War I can still be visited, giving a striking and rare testimony of "the war of the mines" (guerre des mines).
