Kay Boyle Speaking Before a Senate Subcommittee

(Original Caption) The State Department has cleared Joseph M. Franckenstein, husband of novelist Kay Boyle, of four year old security charges, the Senate Constitutional Rights Subcommittee announced. The subcommittee made a public letter to Franckenstein in which the department said "no determination" had been made reflecting on Franckenstein's loyalty. He was a State Department information officer in Germany when fired in 1953 under the security program. Both Franckenstein and his wife denied the charges against them, including one that Miss Boyle had been a Communist from 1940 to 1944. The couple is shown above after they appeared before the subcommittee.
