Spinal Cord & Membranes

The spinal cord is a continuation of the medulla oblongata, 1899. From 'The Treatise of the Human Anatomy and Its Applications to the Practice of Medicine and Surgery, Volume I' (1899). It extends from the lower border of the foramen magnum to the level of the upper border of he second lumbar vertebra. The membranes of the spinal cord are the dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater. They are continuous with the corresponding membranes of the brain, and hold the same relation to each other as do those of the brain. (Photo by VintageMedStock/Getty Images)
