The blood covered body of US Marine Navy diver Rob

BEIRUT, LEBANON: The blood covered body of US Marine Navy diver Robert Stethem, 24, lying 15 June 198 at the American hospital in Beirut after he was gunned down by the Shi'ite Moslem gunmen who hijacked a TWA Boeing 727 jetliner. The Lebanese Shi'ite Moslem gunmen, reputedly members of Hezbollah (the Party of God), hijacked the TWA jetliner 14 June 1985 with 193 people on board, after taking off from Athens to Rome. After twice flying to Beirut and Algiers, and releasing more than 100 hostages, the hijackers landed for the third time in Beirut. They demanded the release of over 700 prisoners, mostly Shi'ites, from Israeli jails and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Southern Lebanon. After they killed a young US Marine 15 June and released five hostages, the terrorists freed all passengers 30 June. Americans were then driven in a Red Cross convoy to Damascus before flying to a US base in West Germany. (Photo credit should read NABIL ISMAIL/AFP via Getty Images)
