Indian Army shot dead civilian in Kashmir

BEERWAH, KASHMIR, INDIA - JULY 21: Tear gassed by Indian government forces Kashmiri Muslims run towards safer places as they were carrying the body of Tanveer Ahmad Pala, a civilian killed by Indian military forces, during his funeral on July 21, 2017 in Beerwah 40 kilometer (25 miles) west of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, India. Thousands of people participated in the funeral of the slain youth, chanting anti-India and pro-freedom slogans in central Kashmir's Budgam district. The Indian army opened fire on a group of Kashmiri youth after it mistook a fire cracker hurled in their direction for a hand grenade, wounding Tanveer Ahmad Pala and another youth. Pala was declared dead at a hospital and the Indian police have registered a case against the Indian Army over the killing, police said. A complete shutdown was observed across Kashmir on Friday even as Indian authorities deployed large number of Indian government forces on roads and imposed restrictions to thwart a march called by pro-independence groups to the United Nations Military Observers Office in Srinagar over what they say are human rights violations by Indian forces.
