Deaf folk musician and music teacher can now hear.
CRISFIELD, MD - JANUARY 10:
Patrick Costello III, of Manassas, Va., plays guitar by sensing the string vibrations through his teeth, as he did when he was nearly completely deaf, while at his parents' home in Crisfield, Md., on Saturday, January 10, 2015. Costello gradually went deaf from repeated ear infections when he was three-years-old. Despite his deafness, and with encouragement from his father, he learned to play guitar and banjo by resting his cheekbone, chin or teeth on the instrument and feeling the vibrations in his head. In 2009, he began a series of surgeries to insert a Cochlear implant, connected to a screw in his skull, on which an external receiver is mounted, transmitting sound vibrations, effectively allowing Costello to hear.
