UNITED KINGDOM - FEBRUARY 23: Man with a model R101 airship, 1939 A photograph of Mr C. Denton with his model R101 airship and hanger, taken by Sayers for the Daily Herald newspaper on 6 January, 1939. A London Transport bus conductor, Mr Denton had apparently made hundreds of model aircraft and ocean liners, all proudly displayed in his living room. At the time it was built in 1929, the R101 was the largest aircraft in existence. Sadly, it crashed into a hillside in France in 1930, killing everyone on board. Disasters such as these, coupled with high maintenance costs, put paid to the longer term development of the airship in the twentieth century. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers. (Photo by Daily Herald Archive/SSPL/Getty Images)
