International Electric Exhibition, Crystal Palace, London, 1882.

UNITED KINGDOM - NOVEMBER 24: International Electric Exhibition at the Crystal Palace, 1882. Illustration taken from the 'Illustrated London News' (Vol 82, 1882). Most of the illustrations are from the section of the exhibition devoted to the subtle and invisible force' of the electric light, demonstrating the generation of electricity by the steam-powered dynamo machines, and its application in the elaborate chandeliers. Also exhibited is the tinfoil phonograph, developed by Thomas Edison (1847-1931) who pioneered sound recording by wrapping tinfoil around a rotating drum and indenting it with a stylus which vibrated in sympathy with the sound. Weaponry and telegraphy also feature. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
