General Orlando Ramon Agosti (R) and Admiral Emilio Massera (L) stand as Lieutenant General Jorge Rafael Videla (C), President of Argentina, after takes an oath as 38th President Argentinian Republic, 29 March 1976, in Buenos Aires. Following a military coup against Isabel Perone, Videla became President, 28 March 1976, as head of three-man military junta including General Agosti and Admiral Massera. Videla retired in 1981 and was succeeded by General Roberto Viola. In 1977, American sources reported 6,000 capital executions and from 12,000 to 17,000 people jailed. Condemned to a life term sentence, Videla was pardoned by President Carlos Menem and released, 30 December 1990.
