Caption: KYAUKPHYU, BERMA-JANUARY 11, 2013: Construction on the trans-Burma oil and natural gas pipelines project is in its final stages. In 2008, China and Burma agreed on a USD $2.5-billion deal to construct oil and gas pipelines connecting the Bay of Bengal with mainland China. This January 11, 2013, image shows the facilities at Kyaukphyu in western Burma on the Bay of Bengal, 400 kilometers northwest of Rangoon (Yangon). The land-entry point for the natural gas pipeline is visible and stretches eastward, covering a distance of approximately 22 kilometers. Extensive construction activity is visible at the oil and natural gas terminals as well as at the airport, which shows that the facilities are not yet complete and require accelerated development to meet the projected operational date of mid-2013.
