Confiscated weapons and ammunition from suspected Somali pirates awaiting trial on June 24, 2010 are used as evidence at the Shimo la Tewa maximum prison at the Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa are displayed during a visit by Justice minister, Mutula Kilonzo alongside other dignitaries who inaugurated a court at the prison to try pirates. The opening of a new courthouse on the prison grounds which will provide a secure location for serious criminal trials, including piracy was funded by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Counter-Piracy Programme, established May 2009, that has worked with Kenyan police, prosecution, courts and prison service to increase the capacity of the country�s criminal justice system and to ensure that suspected pirates transferred to Kenyan authority are afforded a fair and efficient trial and humane imprisonment.
