CHIANG RAI, THAILAND - 2013/04/24: A community member harvests tea leaves at Doi Wawi in Mae Suai district. The trees are planted on terraces to be harvested three times per year. Some of the trees are more than 200 years old. The northern part of Thailand is geographically characterized by multiple mountain ranges, which continue from the Shan Hills in bordering Myanmar and Laos comprising several hill tribal groups, such as Lisu, Lahu, Akha, Karen, and Thai Yai. Several years ago this area was one of the world's largest opium producing areas because in the past the opium poppy was grown as a lucrative crop . Today, the area's image as an opium growing region has been wiped out.. (Photo by Piti A Sahakorn/LightRocket via Getty Images)
