Kolkata pet market at Gallif street is a weekly market held on Sundays where many rare and common species of fish, birds and animals are bought and sold. The wholesale market has been in existence for more than a century (though it has been shifted to its present location not many years ago) and is certainly one of the largest in India. Traders and buyers (including hobbyists) flock here from far away places. Certain banned varieties of birds are also traded here. In spite of many animal rights activists protest and regular visit by the police in plainclothes such illegal trading could not be fully stopped.
