Barrel Organ Players Gather In Berlin

BERLIN, GERMANY - JULY 05: A barrel organ player takes out an organ roll from a barrel organ's drawer at the 34th International Barrel Organ (Drehorgel in German) Festival on July 5, 2014 in Berlin, Germany. Over 70 participants from 11 countries, both European as well as from the United States and Guatemala, joined in the annual gathering. The barrel organ, also known as a roller organ, works in a technically similar fashion to a pipe organ but is cranked by hand, and has been played on the streets of Europe since the 18th century. It is sometimes confused with the hurdy-gurdy, although a player of the latter is free to play any tune he or she wishes, while a barrel organ player is usually limited to pre-programmed songs.
